Super Saturday and Sunday – a look ahead to a bumper spectator weekend





With 35 different sports taking place at more than 25 venues this weekend, it really is going to be a Super Saturday and Super Sunday of spectator opportunities!

Most events are open to the public and entry is FREE, so get down to one of the venues and see international competitors in a range of sports. Here’s a flavour of what’s happening, but you can view the full schedule at: www.2013wpfg.com

Indoor swimming

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August
Bangor Aurora Aquatic and Leisure Centre

Indoor swimming got underway on Friday 1st August and continues into Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th. The venue is the recently opened £38 million leisure facility in Bangor, just outside Belfast. It features Northern Ireland's first 50m international standard swimming pool, as well as a range of state-of-the-art leisure facilities. In the competition, you can see  competitors from a wide range of countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Hong Kong.

Body Building

Saturday 3rd August
Waterfront Hall, Belfast
 
Body building takes place at Waterfront Hall, Belfast on Saturday 3rd August. The 1pm prejudging session is un-ticketed and open to all members of the public on a first come, first served basis. The 7pm showcase is ticketed, a limited number of tickets will be available to members of the public at the Waterfront Hall counter from 10am on Saturday 3rd August. Again, tickets are available on a first come, first served basis. There will be competitors from Sweden, India, Canada and a range of other countries.
 
Mountain Biking

Saturday 3rd (Cross Country) and Sunday 4th (Downhill) August
Rostrevor Forest/Kilbroney Park

Mountain Biking will include Cross Country and Downhill events on the recently opened world-class trails at Rostrevor Forest/Kilbroney Park. Following the WPFG competitions, there will be additional open events in which members of the public and WPFG riders may compete.

Gaelic Football

Saturday 3rd August
Queen’s Sport Upper Malone

Women’s Gaelic football and Men’s Over 35’s events will take place at the playing fields of the Queen’s University, Belfast. Both events will be 7 a-side. Teams will include a World Select Team, Donegal Garda, and the NI Fire and Rescue Service. (Gaelic Football also takes place on Wednesday 7th and 8th August.)

Rugby – Touch

Saturday 3rd August
Queen’s Sport Upper Malone

The touch rugby event will be a mixed team event and will be held at Queen’s Sport Upper Malone. The competition will include teams from Italy, Australia and elsewhere.

Judo and Karate

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August
Shankill Leisure Centre

Judo and Karate will take place in the Shankill Leisure Centre, Belfast. In Karate, the Kumite competition will take place on Saturday 3rd August whilst the Kata event will take place on Sunday 4th August. Competitors will be from a range of countries including Japan and Taiwan.

Canoe Sprint

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August
Castlewellan Lake

Canoe Sprint will take place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th August at Castlewellan Lake in the valley between Slievenaslat and Slievebeg, within the grounds of Castlewellan Forest Park

Road Race – Half Marathon

Cookstown
Sunday 4th August
  
Half Marathon Road Race will be run over the standard distance of 21.1km or 13.1 miles and will take place in Cookstown. The 2013 WPFG race will be held in conjunction with the Cookstown Half Marathon which is an established event on the Northern Ireland Athletics calendar.

Triathlon

Sunday 4th August
Belfast

The 2013 WPFG Triathlon will be incorporated into Belfast's premier Triathlon event, The Intersport Belfast Titanic Triathlon. It will consist of a 1500m open water swim, a 37km bike ride and a 10km run. The swim will take place close to the new Belfast Titanic Building, the bike route will run past the Samson and Goliath twin cranes and the site where the Titanic was built and the run route will go through the heart of Belfast City Centre.

Tug Of War

Saturday 3rd August
Stormont Estate

The Tug of War competition at WPFG 2013 will be held in Stormont Pavilion within Stormont Estate and will consist of the following categories:

Mens - (6 person team) Lightweight (1080lbs/490kg) Heavyweight (1500lbs/680kg) Catchweight (no limit)
Womens - (6 person team) Lightweight (767lbs/380kg) Heavyweight (828lbs/410kg)
Unisex - (8 person team) Catchweight (no limit)

These are just a flavour of some of the events taking place this weekend. Others include angling, basketball, cricket 20/20, ice-hockey, soccer, track & field, and indoor volleyball.
